I Did No School Work Over Break, But I Dont Regret It The weeks between Thanksgiving break and winter break are both a blessing and a curse. After a week at home, it is normal to begin to feel restless. For me, the lack of routine set in quickly, and I grew anxious to get back to my daily schedule in Champaign. But coming back for just a few short weeks is not all like I thought it would be. Photo from Pinterest I was greeted by an hour of unpacking, two loads of laundry, and four semester projects. Not to mention the anticipation of finals, as well. I also found it incredibly hard to fall asleep Sunday night and began to miss my full-sized bed at home. Needless to say, coming back to school was a rough adjustment. Ultimately, I am the one to blame for such a stressful return, though. I slacked off during the break, knowing very well the repercussions I would face. Instead of keeping up with class reading, projects, and notes, I chose to reconnect with my friends and spend time with my family. And the truth is that I probably wouldnt do anything differently. Photo  from Giphy To me, breaks from school are just that: a time to relax, unwind, and catch up. It is not, contrary to popular belief, a time to stress about tests and assignments. Why? Because thats what the school year is for. I chose my family over my schoolwork, which is a sacrifice I do not, in any way, regret. Overall, the point is this: prepare for breaks by working ahead, use breaks as they should be used, and be prepared to work twice as hard upon returning  to school. Can Reading Comics Make Us Smarter Hult Blog

Of all of our senses, it’s vision that requires the most cerebral horsepower to process information. And while words on a screen or a page can be compelling, it’s pictures that are a cut above in terms of delivering information, according to Alex Lundry, Vice President and Director of Research at TargetPoint. â€Å"In neurology, this is called the ‘pictorial superiority effect’ [] If I present information to you orally, you’ll probably only remember about 10% 72 hours after exposure, but if I add a picture, recall soars to 65%. So we are hard-wired to find visualization more compelling than a spreadsheet.† So maybe this is why when it comes to reading, some people are more likely to gravitate toward a comic book (let’s consider â€Å"graphic novel† a synonym) than a picture-less tome – even as adults. But what if your comic book days are long behind you, or you never had any because you considered them superfluous, or even harmful? Comic books have long had critics. Probably the most vociferous one was psychiatrist Frederic Wertham, who declared decades ago that comic books morally corrupt impressionable young readers, taking them down life paths of dissolution and violence. Imagine if he’d lived to see video games! He also asserted that he had the research to back up his claims. But a New York Times article last week brought Wertham back into the spotlight (his legacy anyway; he died in 1981). Since 2010, assistant professor of Library Science, Carol Tilley has combed through all of Wertham’s research. In the process, she discovered that he had â€Å"manipulated, overstated, compromised and fabricated evidence.† The cracks in the long-standing wall of â€Å"evidence† against comic books, evidence that had been given credence in the arenas of mental health and juvenile delinquency, grew into chasms. And then there’s this. A recent study on graphic novels conducted at the University of Oklahoma builds on the idea of the pictorial superiority effect: not only may they help boost memory, but they may also be a far more effective teaching tools than the long-established textbook. An article from the January edition of Look at OKC magazine describes details of the study, in which over a hundred business major undergraduates participated. One half of the students were asked to read a graphic novel on important management concepts, while the other half were asked to read the same concepts in textbook format. Afterwards, all the students were quizzed. Those who had read the graphic novel were more likely â€Å"to recognize direct quotes† than those who had read the textbook. And in a related study, over a hundred students were asked to give feedback on a graphic novel they had been assigned to read in a business class; 80% said they preferred the graphic novel format to a textbook. The article includes a quote from the lead author of the study, Jeremy Short. â€Å"With that kind of information [in the study], that really has a lot of implications about how we should be teaching business, how we should be teaching a lot of things, really.† None of this is very likely a surprise for Christina Blanch, who teaches at Ball State University, and is also leading the charge on a massively open online course (MOOC) called â€Å"Gender Through Comic Books† that starts in April. Digital Spy conducted an interview with her back in January on her experience incorporating comic books in the classroom. In the interview, Blanch talks about swapping out a â€Å"dry and boring† anthropology textbook for a comic book that touched on relevant themes in the class. Said Blanch in the interview: â€Å"It was amazing. The students were all engaged, they all read the material, they even read the textbook to make sure that they were getting things right. It started so much more conversation in the class.† Blanch has a theory about why students respond so well to comic books in the classroom, which she believes has a lot to do with the brain’s ability to process a limited amount of information at one time (typically, up to seven items): â€Å"When you have something with a word and picture combined, that [†¦] counts as one schema, so youre only processing that one thing and you get so much more information out of it.† While Blanch reports that reactions from her teaching colleagues have been â€Å"mixed,† some first-time critics have been transformed into advocates after seeing the results. Some have even asked her to teach a class on teaching with comic books. Once viewed as a societal bane by some, comic books are now increasingly recognized as an educational blessing of sorts for teachers and students alike. While more research has yet to be done, preliminary results are promising and clear: incorporating comic books in the classroom can increase student engagement and learning, stimulate curiosity, and improve memory. And without any research to underpin this next assertion, I will posit that students are very likely not to complain about that – and may even get better grades because of it. Yellow Journalism was a form of newspaper that told outrageous stories to catch the readers’ eye. Newspaper publishers William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer II used the form of journalism as a marketing campaign to get customers, in order to buy their newspapers. They include stories, drawings, and cartoons. Instead, the journal gave birth to modern-day investigative Journalism. It was during the 1890s, this newspaper would cause a war between the United States and Spain. Dad worked, Mom stayed at home, and the home had school aged children. Diane Crisbell, in her article Myths of the 1950’s, found that 79% of US homes had this structure in the 50’s. During this time only 25% of married women worked outside the home. Non Traditional families, or those that had only one parent, made up only 11% of the families. Crisbell also noted that girls were less likely to have children out of wedlock and that there was less crime during the 1950’s. In 2007 Time International did a study. In this study they found that in the 1950’s 79% of newly wed couples would reach their 15th wedding anniversary. In the 1950’s the cost of living was lower than it is today. The 6th edition of the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia has the minimum wage listed at 75 cents an hour for 1950 until 1956 when it was raised to 1 dollar an hour. Minimum wage is set by the government, and determined by the lowest a person can make in order to maintain a life style just above the minimum needed to survive. The United States Government had met and determined that the lowest amount a person could make in order to survive was only 1 dollar an hour. This would mean that the 1 dollar an hour would be sufficient to pay for a place to live, food on the table, along with heat and electric in the 1950’s. Around the 1830s-1840s, immigrants started coming to the United States and organized sweatshops in tenement buildings. Despite poor health problems and disease from the harsh conditions, immigrants needed the work and were appreciative. Today sweatshops are often found in slow, developing countries, but many are found around the world. Majority of the workers are commonly women and children, who are usually uneducated. The result of these activities is that Microsoft and AOL will continue to go toe-to-toe for control of the digital consumer until a winner emerges. AOL/Time Warner: Who won? Determining who won and who lost in the AOL-Time Warner merger is complicated by the choice of criteria used to determine victory. If a more formidable and sustainable competitor was created, did both Companies win? But ask any Time Warner shareholder who won and youll get an unambiguous answer; AOL. By most standards, its acquisition was a coup. Its true that the merger makes great strategic sense for the businesses in which both companies compete. But the fact that AOL acquired Time Warner with vastly inflated stock means that AOL shareholders partook in one of the great robberies of the Internet bubble. While the value of most Internet companies plummeted over the past three years, AOL shareholders had managed to acquire some of the most valuable old economy assets. Time Warner, on the other hand, has seen the value of its consideration decline substantially, at a time when its stable mix of businesses should have held up much better. Had Time Warner acquired AOL for 20-30% of AOLs market value in January 2000, it might have been viewed as one of the shrewdest mergers in recent memory. The circumstances of the two companies coming together, however, will leave a cloud over the Company until it begins to realize its great potential that was envisioned at the outset.
